Bi-directional, or figure-eight mode, might be useful for face-to-face interview scenarios, but figure-eight patterns can bring some room sound into a signal without bringing all of the room's sound into the mix, so it's worth experimenting with this mode if you want to record your voice and some of the room, but perhaps reject the audio that is to your left and right—in this mode, pointing the mic in the proper direction is crucial. If you have the mic angled up to your mouth while it's on a desktop, this is probably not the ideal polar pattern, as it might pick up unwanted acoustic reflections off your desktop (through the back panel). That said, the figure-eight pattern does an excellent job of rejecting audio from the sides.
